FASTPTCP Installation and Configuration
Considerations
The Spoolcom PRINT PARM attribute can be used to specify additional print-
process configuration options for FASTPTCP. These options include:
Enabling debugging features.
Extending shadow trace files so information for multiple jobs can accumulate in
the shadow trace file.
Enabling detailed EMS events.
Writing ASCII text (old 512 text format) messages to $0 instead of generating
the newer tokenized event messages.
Setting bit 5 (%2000) of the Spoolcom DEV PARM attribute is no longer required
for FASTPTCP; the FASTCNFG/FASTKCON files are always read.
FASTPTCP supports SHUTDOWNTO, a new FASTCNFG device attribute, for
several FASTPTCP printer configurations. SHUTDOWNTO allows you to specify
the interval FASTPTCP should wait for a session shutdown to complete.
The recommended setting of the FASTCNFG device attribute TIMEOUT for AWAN
server connections has been changed. Extremely large values, such as 12345678
(specified in older documentation) are no longer recommended. The new
recommendation is to specify values in the range 180000 (30 minutes) to 720000
(2 hours).
The FASTCNFG device attribute SLOWPACE is no longer generally recommended
for AWAN server connections. SLOWPACE has been largely superseded by
NOTIMINGMARK=NO for AWAN and by SHUTDOWNTO.
Some new model HP JetDirect interfaces now default the SNMP community name
to “not configured” to prevent access. For these interfaces, the SNMP community
name must now also be configured at the HP JetDirect interface to match the
FASTCNFG SMNP value.
FASTPTCP supports a new FASTCNFG keyword, POLLTYPE, and a new
FASTKCON or FASTCNFG device attribute, POLLTYPENAME, for HP JetDirect
printer configurations. POLLTYPENAME allows you to specify the name of a
POLLTYPE record to control interpretation of SNMP responses, and POLLTYPE
allows you to define these POLLTYPE records. Essentially, these features allow
you to determine whether FASTPTCP will perform MIB-II SysUpTime processing
and how FASTPTCP will map SNMP printer responses to Guardian file error codes
and EMS operator messages. POLLTYPE requires FASTKCON.
In addition, note that the use of bit 2 (%20000) of the Spoolcom DEV PARM attribute
can be set for the HP JetDirect protocols to cause all SNMP responses to be logged to
$0.
