Character Substitution
Character Substitution
There are a number of countries that share a common character set, with the
exception of national-use characters. National-use characters are represented by a
different hexadecimal code (bit combination), depending on the country using the
character. For example, 5BH can represent an AE, an A umlaut, a reverse !, or a
degree symbol.
When national language substitution is specified with the CHARSET device attribute,
the country option determines how a national-use character is translated from the
standard character set used by the Spooler to the specified character set.
Table A-2
shows national use character tables for Denmark, Germany, Spain, France,
Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Each table contains a list of that country’s
national use characters and the hexadecimal code used to represent each character in
the standard character set used by the Spooler and in the country’s character set.
