FASTCNFG DEVICE Attributes for Lexmark Printers
FASTCNFG DEVICE Attributes for Lexmark Printers
When printers are attached to the network through the Lexmark protocol, FASTPTCP
implements a job-completion protocol for assured printing to a special TCP/IP port and
uses UDP datagrams to retrieve printer status from SMNP. When using this protocol,
the printer returns a confirmation message when the last printed page reaches the
output bin; then FASTPTCP releases the job from the Spooler. If problems arise,
FASTPTCP queries the SNMP agent on the printer adapter to determine printer status
and recovery strategy.
The Lexmark protocol supports the 5576/78 laser printers and other Lexmark printers
with an internal network adapter at firmware level x.52 or greater.
Lexmark printers use a CONTYPE value of TCP/IP and a PROTOCOL value of
LEXMARK. The minimal FASTCNFG entry needed for a Lexmark connected printer is
as follows:
DEVICE $
device-name
CONTYPE = TCP/IP
PROTOCOL = LEXMARK
ADDRESS =
ip-address
PORT = 9400
Note that the CONTYPE and PORT attributes are not required because CONTYPE =
TCP/IP is the default connection type and 9400 is the default port for the Lexmark
protocol. The PORT attribute is only required if the Lexmark printer is configured to use
another port.
Optional DEVICE Attributes for Lexmark Printers
In addition, the DEVICE entry can contain any of the optional attributes for all TCP/IP-
connected devices as described in
Optional DEVICE Attributes for All FASTPTCP
Devices
on page 3-18 and the following optional attributes:
SNMP-COMMUNITY =
community-name
specifies an SNMP community name that will be sent as part of SNMP requests to
the agent to solicit device status. The default name is
public
.
POLLINT =
interval
specifies the time (in 10-millisecond units) that FASTPTCP should wait at end-of-
job to detect printing completion. The default value is 200 (2 seconds).
Note.
Printronix 5576/78 printers can be attached through FASTPTCP in many ways. In
addition to a LEXMARK connection, they can also be attached through a direct connection
(PROTOCOL=NONE, PORT=9100) or through an LPD connection (PROTOCOL=LPD1179,
PORT=515).
