CMT-130TC Book Trimmer
6-17
6. General Procedures/Information
6. The shelf also supports the book as it
crosses the span between the Pile Feeder
and the trimmer.
Option 3: In-line + Pile Feeder
1. This is a combination of options 1 and 2,
where the Pile Feeder is placed in between
the Elevator and CMT-130TC. The Se-
quence of Operations is the same as for
each option, with the only difference being
that when books exit the Elevator, they pass
through the Pile Feeder by way of the lower
tilt table conveyor in the level position.
Option 4: Standard Hand-Feed Conveyor
1. Bound books are placed in stacks of 1, 2, or
3 books on the conveyor against a back-
stop.
2. The conveyor delivers books into the trim-
mer at the proper time intervals, as deter-
mined by the trimmer’s computer. The trim-
mer controls the conveyor motor by switch-
ing power to it on or off.
Option 5: Long Hand-Feed Conveyor
1. Bound books are placed in stacks of 1, 2, or
3 books on the conveyor against a back-
stop.
2. The conveyor delivers books into the trim-
mer at the proper time intervals, as deter-
mined by the trimmer’s computer. The trim-
mer controls the conveyor motor by switch-
ing power to it on or off.
Sequence of Operations
– Trimmer
1. Books enter into the trimmer on the internal
infeed conveyor. As a book moves along
the conveyor, an optical distance sensor
mounted above the conveyor measures the
thickness of the book and relays that infor-
mation to the computer.
2. As the book moves across the bottom plate
of the gripper, a retro-reflective sensor
mounted on the gripper assembly detects
when a book is in position and ready to be
clamped by the gripper. Once the book is in
the proper position, the conveyors stop, and
the gripper clamps the book.
3. The gripper lifts slightly by an air cylinder
mounted to the gripper, then transports the
book to the registration station using a DC
servo motor controlling its linear motion. As
the book is transported, air is blasted under-
neath it to reduce friction and scratching to
the cover. When the book enters the regis-
tration area, a retro-reflective sensor detects
the front and spine edges of the book as it
passes beneath it. This provides the com-
puter with the starting width dimension of the
book.
4. The registration plate is accurately posi-
tioned by a leadscrew controlled by a DC
motor with encoder feedback. The registra-
tion plate is retracted by an air cylinder
whenever the book moves in and out of the
registration area. It remains extended while
the book is being jogged and squared. On
the left side of the table, a jogging plate at-
tached to an air cylinder pushes the book
firmly into the registration plate. The gripper
moves forward slowly to bring the binding
flush with the back fence on the gripper and
therefore parallel to the face knife. The grip-
per then clamps the book and accelerates to
the trimming station.
5. The gripper moves the book to the proper
cutting position for the face trim.
6. The knife and clamp assembly is driven by a
hydraulic cylinder mounted to a cast iron
frame underneath the table. The clamp
leads the knife and is powered by com-
pressed air captured in a set of air cylinders
mounted to the clamp. The air pressure to
the clamp cylinders is adjustable at the rear
of the machine.
7. The unload valve closes, preventing oil from
flowing back to tank. The cut valve opens
allowing oil to fl
ow to the “down” port on the
hydraulic cylinder. A counterbalance valve
on the cylinder prevents the knife assembly
from moving until there is 900 PSI. The
knife assembly begins moving at 900 PSI.
The pressure increases under load of cutting
and clamping. The system relief pressure is
set from 1800-2000 PSI. Oil is sent back to
tank at this pressure setting.
8. The knife depth adjustment plunger actuates
the knife slowdown sensor at approximately
1/2 inch above the table. When the sensor
switches on, the computer adjusts a propor-
tional valve in the hydraulic manifold to slow
the cutting mechanism in order to reduce
shock when the mechanism hits the bottom
of its stroke.
9. There are two knife-down switches, each
comprised of a steel collar and an isolated
stop block. When the cutting mechanism
reaches the bottom of its stroke, each stop
block come in contact with its corresponding
collar, thereby acting as a closed switch.
When both switches are closed, the com-
puter knows that the cutting mechanism is
down and should return up.
10. The direction of oil flow is reversed, causing
the knife assembly to be sent up. A sensor
detects that the knife assembly is in the up
position, at which point the unload valve
opens.
11. The gripper rotates the book 90° counter-
clockwise in order to prepare for the bottom
trim. When the gripper is ready to rotate, a
locking air cylinder releases, then a DC
servo motor rotates the gripper to the proper
