DNS Domain Name System
Each device in a

TCP/IP network is usually located by its

address . Because

host names are often used in networks to reach
different devices, it is necessary for the associated IP address to be known. This
task can be performed by a Domain Name Server (DNS), which resolves the
host names into IP addresses. Alternatively, name resolution can also take
place over the HOSTS file, which is available on all PCs.
Domain A domain refers to a group of devices in a network, whose host names share a
common suffix, the domain name. Thus, in the

Internet , a part of a
naming hierarchy (e.g. bintec.de).
