13. Perform Steps 10 and 11 to check and adjust
each valve in the front cylinder.
14. When the clearance of each valve is within
specification, reinstall the removed parts by revers-
ing the removal procedure. Note the following:
a. Before installing the front-cylinder cam
sprocket cover, install a new O-ring (A,
Fig-
ure 13
) onto the breather plate and set the
breather plate in place in the cam sprocket
cover (B).
NOTE
A breather plate is not used on the
rear cam sprocket cover.
b. Use a new O-ring (C,
Figure 13
) when in-
stalling each cam sprocket cover onto the cyl-
inder head. Torque the cam sprocket cover
bolts (A,
Figure 12
) to the 10 N•m (89
in.-lb.).
c. Torque the valve cover bolts to 10 N•m (89
in.-lb.) and the spark plugs to the 20 N•m (15
ft.-lb.).
d. Install the cylinder head covers as described
in Chapter Four.
SPARK PLUGS
Removal
A spark plug can be used to help determine the
operating condition of its cylinder when it is prop-
erly read. As each spark plug is removed, label it
with its cylinder number.
1. Remove the cylinder head covers as described in
Chapter Four.
2. Grasp the spark plug lead (
Figure 19
) as near to
the plug as possible and pull the lead off the plug.
CAUTION
Whenever a spark plug is removed,
dirt around it can fall into the plug
hole. This can cause serious engine
damage.
3. Blow away any dirt that has accumulated in the
spark plug well.
NOTE
If a plug is difficult to remove, apply
penetrating oil, like WD 40 or Liquid
Wrench, around base of plug and let it
soak in for about 10 20 minutes.
4. Remove the spark plug (
Figure 20
) with a
5/8-in. spark plug wrench with a rubber insert to
hold the plug. Label the spark plug by cylinder
number.
5. Repeat for the remaining spark plug.
