7. Inspect the rocker arms and shafts as described
in this section.
Installation
NOTE
Each rocker arm and shaft have be
come mated through wear. Unless a
part is being replaced, install each
rocker arm with its original shaft, and
install them in their original locations
(intake or exhaust side) in the cylinder
head.
1. Apply engine oil to the rocker arm bore and to
the rocker shaft.
CAUTION
The rocker shaft is directional. The
non threaded end of the shaft is the in
board side.
2. Insert the rocker arm through the camshaft port
(
Figure 48
) and set the rocker arm into its original
place in the cylinder head (
Figure 49
).
3. Thread the slide hammer bolt, or the 8 × 125 mm
bolt, into the threaded end of the rocker arm shaft.
Use the bolt to install the shaft into the head (
Figure
50
). Make sure the shaft passes through the boss on
the rocker arm and bottoms in the cylinder head.
4. When installing an exhaust rocker arm, slide a
new copper washer on the rocker arm bolt (A,
Fig-
ure 45
) with a single hole. Turn the rocker arm bolt
into the cylinder head and torque the bolt to 37 N•m
(27 ft.-lb.).
5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for the other rocker arm. Do
not install the intake rocker arm bolt at this time. It
will be installed during oil line installation after the
engine has been bolted into the frame (Chapter
Five).
6. Reinstall the cylinder head as described in this
chapter.
Inspection
1. Clean all parts in solvent and dry them thor-
oughly with compressed air.
2. Inspect the rocker arm pad (A,
Figure 51
) where
it rides on the cam lobe. Replace the rocker arm if
the pad surface is scratched, unevenly worn or
shows signs of blue discoloration. If the rocker arm
