d. Evenly tighten the brake disc bolts in a criss-
cross pattern. Torque the bolts to 23 N•m (17
ft.-lb.).
BRAKE HOSE REPLACEMENT
Check the brake hoses at the brake system inspec-
tion intervals listed in Chapter Three. Replace any
brake hose that is cracked, bulging or shows signs
of chafing, wear or other damage.
When replacing a brake hose, refer to
Figure 82
and perform the following:
1. Use a tarp or plastic drop cloth to cover areas of
the motorcycle where brake fluid could spill.
2. Drain the brake fluid from the front or rear brake
system as described in this chapter.
3. Note how the brake line is routed through the
motorcycle. Make a drawing so the new line can be
routed along the same path as the original hose or
pipe.
4. Remove any holder or ties securing the line to
the motorcycle. Also note the location of these
clamps or ties. See A, B, and C
Figure 83
when re-
placing a rear brake hose.
5. Note how the hose fitting is installed on a master
cylinder or caliper. Note whether the hose fitting
sits on the inboard or outboard side of the indexing
post. The new hose fitting must sit on the same side
of the post.
6. Remove the banjo bolt from the hose fitting on
each end of the hose. Discard the copper washer on
each side of the hose fitting.
7. When replacing a rear brake reservoir hose, slide
the hose clamps along the hose, and pull the hose
from the fitting on the brake reservoir and on the
master cylinder.
8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Compare the new and old hoses. Make sure
they are the same.
b. Clean the banjo bolts and hose ends to re-
move any contamination.
c. Refer to the notes made during removal and
route the new hose along the same path as the
original hose. Secure the hose to the motorcy-
cle at the same locations noted during re-
moval.
d. Replace any banjo bolt with a damaged head
or threads.
e. Install a new copper washer on each side of a
brake hose fitting.
f. Torque the banjo bolt to 30 N•m (22 ft.-lb.).
g. After replacing a front brake line, turn han-
dlebars from side to side to make sure the
hose does not rub against any part or pull
away from its brake component.
h. Refill the master cylinder and bleed the
brakes as described in this chapter.
WARNING
Before riding the motorcycle, confirm
that the brake lights work and that the
front and rear brakes operate prop
erly with full hydraulic advantage.
i. Slowly test ride the motorcycle to confirm
that the brakes are operating properly.
