stator wires is shorted to ground. Replace the
stator/pickup coil assembly.
Stator/Pickup Coil Assembly
Removal/Installation
Refer to
Figure 6
.
The stator/pickup coil is an assembly. The stator
and pickup coil are not available separately.
1. Remove the alternator cover as described in
Chapter Five.
2. Disconnect the three-pin stator connector (A,
Figure 4
) and the two-pin pickup coil connector (B)
from their harness mates.
3. Remove the mounting screw and lift the wire
clamp (A,
Figure 7
) from the alternator cover.
4. Remove the pickup coil mounting screws (B,
Figure 7
) and the stator mounting screws (C).
5. Pry the two grommets (D,
Figure 7
) from the
cover.
6. Note how the coil assembly cable is routed
through the cover, and remove the coil assembly
and its cable.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
a. Apply a medium-strength threadlocking
compound to the threads of the stator mount-
ing screws (C,
Figure 7
) and the pickup coil
mounting screws (B). Torque the stator
screws to 10 N•m (89 in.-lb.) and the pickup
coil screws to 7 N•m (62 in.-lb.).
b. Securely seat the grommets (D,
Figure 7
) in
the cover.
c. Route the cable along the same path noted
during removal.
d. Apply a dielectric compound to the electrical
connectors prior to reconnecting them.
e. Make sure the electrical connector is free of
corrosion and both sides are completely cou-
pled to each other.
f. Reinstall the alternator cover as described in
Chapter Five.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR/RECTIFIER
Removal/Installation
The voltage regulator/rectifier mounts to the in-
side of the battery box, which must be removed for
access to the regulator/rectifier.
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Disconnect the electrical lead from the negative
battery terminal (A,
Figure 1
).
3. Remove the battery box as described in Chapter
Fourteen.
4. Press the release tab and disconnect the connec-
tor (A,
Figure 8
) from the voltage regulator/recti-
fier.
5. Remove the regulator/rectifier bolts (B,
Figure
8
) and remove the regulator/rectifier from the bat-
tery box.
6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Apply a dielectric compound to the electrical
connector prior to reconnecting it.
b. Make sure the electrical connector is free of
corrosion and is completely coupled to its
mate.
