4. Remove the brake disc bolts (C,
Figure 3
). Lift
the hub plate and brake disc from the hub. Repeat
this on the opposite side.
5. Pry the seal (
Figure 20
) from each side of the
hub. Place a shop rag beneath the pry tool so the hub
will not be damaged.
6. Inspect the bearings as described in
Wheel In
spection
in this chapter. If necessary, remove and
replace the bearings as described in this chapter.
7. Pack the lips of a new seal with lithium soap
grease. Drive the seal in squarely with a seal driver
or large diameter socket (
Figure 14
) seated on the
outer portion of the seal. Drive the seal until it seats
against the bearing or when the outer surface is
flush with the hub.
8. Repeat for the seal on the opposite side of the
hub.
9. Install the brake disc and hub cover, if it was re-
moved, as follows:
a. Set the brake disc in place so its arrow points
in the direction of forward rotation.
b. Set the hub plate on the hub.
c. The brake disc bolts (C,
Figure 3
) are made
from a harder material than similar bolts used
on the motorcycle. When replacing the bolts, al-
ways use standard Yamaha brake disc bolts.
Never compromise and use generic replace-
ment bolts. They may not properly secure the
disc to the hub.
d. Use a small amount of medium-strength
threadlocking compound on the brake disc
bolts prior to installation.
e. Evenly tighten the brake disc bolts in a crisscross
pattern. Torque the bolts to 23 N•m (17 ft.-lb.).
REAR WHEEL
Removal
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face. Drain the final gear oil as described in Chapter
Three.
2. Remove the mufflers (Chapter Eight).
CAUTION
Since the rear fender on XVS1100A
models wraps low around the rear
wheel, the motorcycle must be raised
very high to remove the rear wheel
with the fender installed. Unless you
have a jack that can safely provide the
necessary
clearance,
remove
the
fender before removing the rear wheel.
3. On XVS1100A models, remove the rear fender
as described in Chapter Fourteen.
4. Release the rear brake line from the clamp (
Fig-
ure 21
) on the swing arm.
NOTE
Insert vinyl tubing or a piece of wood
between the brake pads in the caliper.
That way, if the brake pedal is inad
vertently applied, the pistons will not
be forced out of the cylinders. If this
does happen, the caliper might have
to be disassembled to reseat the pis
tons and the system will have to be
bled. By using the wood, bleeding the
brake is not necessary when installing
the wheel.
5. Remove the caliper mounting bolts (
Figure 22
).
Lift the caliper from the brake disc and suspend it
with wire or bunjee cord.
6. Remove the brake caliper bracket bolt (A,
Fig-
ure 23
