6. Lubricate the splines of the middle driven shaft
with lithium soap grease and slide the bearing hous-
ing onto the shaft.
7. Seat the speed sensor bracket (C,
Figure 45
), ro-
tor (B) and the drive yoke on the bearing housing.
8. Lubricate a new O-ring with lithium soap grease
and carefully roll the O-ring onto the middle drive
shaft. Make sure the shaft threads do not tear the
O-ring.
NOTE
A specified torque is not provided for
the middle driven shaft nut. Instead,
the nut is tightened until the middle
gear backlash is within specification.
9. Install the washer and the middle driven shaft
nut (B,
Figure 48
). Apply a medium-strength
threadlocking compound to the nut threads and fin-
ger-tighten the nut at this time.
10. Install the universal joint holder (A,
Figure 48
)
onto the drive yoke and install the middle gear
backlash band (
Figure 49
) onto the middle drive
shaft assembly.
11. Set a dial gauge against the backlash band so
the plunger sits 68.2 mm (2.69 in.) from the center
of the middle drive shaft. See
Figure 50
.
CAUTION
Gradually tighten the nut in small in
crements and check the middle gear
backlash. If the nut is overtightened,
the collapsible collar will be crushed
and will have to be replaced.
12. Gradually tighten the middle driven gear nut
(B,
Figure 48
) while measuring the middle gear
backlash.
a. Tighten the nut in a small increment and stop.
b. Turn the universal joint holder and read the
backlash on the dial gauge.
c. Repeat substeps a and b until the backlash is
within the range specified in
Table 1
.
13. Stake the middle driven shaft nut to lock it in
place.
14. Assemble the universal joint as follows:
a. Install the driven yoke into place in the drive
yoke.
b. When using a hydraulic press, support the as-
sembly in a vise.
c. Lubricate each bearing with engine oil.
CAUTION
The needles can easily fall out of their
races. Check each bearing before in
stallation.
d. Set a bearing into the drive yoke so the side
with the circlip groove faces down into the
yoke.
CAUTION
Do not use a hammer to install the
bearing. Hammering could distort the
collapsible collar in the middle driven
shaft assembly. If this occurs, the col
lar must be replaced.
e. Install a new circlip (A,
Figure 46
) so it is
completely seated in the bearing’s circlip
groove.
