cannot be reused. Remove wheel
bearings only if they must be re
placed.
1. Remove the rear wheel as described in this chap-
ter.
2. The condition of the rear wheel bearings is criti-
cal to the tracking and acceleration performance of
the motorcycle. Check the wheel bearings when-
ever the wheel is removed or as one of the first steps
when diagnosing handling or noise problems.
3. Insert the axle through the hub and turn the axle
by hand. Each bearing should turn smoothly with-
out noise or excessive play.
4. If the rear wheel was not inspected during re-
moval, inspect it as described in
Wheel Inspection
in this chapter.
Disassembly/Assembly
Refer to
Figure 34
when servicing the rear hub.
1. Remove the rear wheel as described in this chap-
ter. Set the wheel on wooden blocks.
2. Pull the final gearcase assembly (
Figure 28
)
straight up and remove it from the hub. Watch for
the distance collar (
Figure 29
). It should come out
with the final gearcase. Reinstall the distance collar
(A,
Figure 30
) in the final gearcase so the collar
will not be misplaced.
3. Pry the seal (
Figure 35
) from the right side of the
hub. Place a shop rag beneath the pry tool so the hub
will not be damaged.
4. Inspect the bearings as described in
Wheel In
spection
in this chapter. If necessary, remove and
replace the bearings as described in this chapter.
5. If the final gear clutch hub must be removed, re-
move it as follows:
a. Bend the lock tab away from the flat of each
clutch hub nut (A,
Figure 36
).
b. Loosen and remove the clutch hub nuts.
c. Remove and discard the two lockplates (B,
Figure 36
). New lockplates must be installed
during assembly.
d. Remove the clutch hub from the rear hub.
e. Remove and discard the O-rings that sit be-
hind the clutch hub. New O-rings must be in-
stalled during assembly.
f. If necessary, remove the wheel dampers.
6. Inspect the rear hub as described in this chapter.
7. Pack the lips of a new oil seal with lithium soap
grease. Drive the seal in squarely with a seal driver
(
Figure 37
) or a large diameter socket seated on the
outer portion of the seal. Drive the seal until it seats
against the bearing or when the outer surface is
flush with the hub.
8. Install the final gear clutch hub assembly, if it
was removed, as follows:
a. Install the dampers into the hub. If necessary,
lubricate the dampers with a soap solution.
