5. Install the snap ring (B,
Figure 68
) so it is com-
pletely seated in its groove in the master cylinder.
6. Check the operation of the master cylinder and
slide the dust boot (
Figure 64
) into position. Make
sure it is firmly seated against the master cylinder.
7. Install the master cylinder as described in this
chapter.
Inspection
The piston, cups, spring, pushrod, boot, snap ring
and adjuster bolt are all replaced as a kit. Individual
parts are not available. If any of these parts are
faulty, purchase the master cylinder kit.
1. Clean all parts in fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Place
the master cylinder components on a clean lint-free
cloth when performing the following inspections.
2. Check the seat of the piston (D,
Figure 67
)
where it contacts the pushrod for wear.
3. Check the primary cup (A,
Figure 67
) and sec-
ondary cup (B) for damage, softness or swelling.
4. Inspect the piston body and the spring (C,
Fig-
ure 67
) for damage or bending.
5. Inspect the end of the pushrod (A,
Figure 68
)
where it contacts the piston for damage.
6. Inspect the pushrod dust boot (C,
Figure 68
) for
tears or other signs of damage.
7. If any of the parts inspected in Steps 2-6 are
worn, damaged or bent, replace all of them with the
master cylinder kit.
8. Inspect the clevis (D,
Figure 68
) and brake lever
(B,
Figure 60
) for cracks, bending or other signs of
damage.
9. Inspect the cylinder bore (A,
Figure 69
) and pis-
ton contact surfaces for signs of wear or damage. If
either part is less than perfect, replace the master
cylinder.
10. Inspect the threads of the master cylinder
mounting bosses (B,
Figure 69
) and the fluid outlet
port (C). If the threads are damaged or partially
stripped, replace the master cylinder assembly.
11. Make sure the passages in the inlet port (
Figure
70
) are clear.
12. Measure the master cylinder inside diameter
with a bore gauge (
Figure 71
). If the inside diame-
ter is out of specification (
Table 2
), replace the mas-
ter cylinder body.
13. Inspect the reservoir diaphragm (A,
Figure 72
)
and cap (B) for tears, cracks or other signs of dam-
age. Replace as necessary.
