9. Remove the Woodruff key (C,
Figure 53
) from
the crankshaft.
10. Set the assembly down on the bench. If neces-
sary, remove the timing gear (A,
Figure 54
) from
the primary drive gear (B).
11. Remove each pin/spring assembly (
Figure 55
)
from the slots in the primary drive gear. A total of
six pins and six springs should be found. Store them
in a recloseable plastic bag.
Installation
1. Insert a pin into each spring (
Figure 56
) and in-
stall two sets of pins/springs into each slot on the
primary drive gear (
Figure 55
). Push the springs as
far apart as possible.
2. Apply grease to the dogs (A,
Figure 57
) on the
timing gear.
3. Position the timing gear so its index mark (C,
Figure 54
) aligns with the keyway (D) on the pri-
mary drive gear. Set the dogs between the springs in
each gear slot and press the timing gear into place.
4. Install the primary drive gear/timing gear assem-
bly onto the crankshaft and install the Woodruff key
(C,
Figure 53
) into the keyway.
5. Install the slotted washer (
Figure 52
) so its slot
engages the Woodruff key.
6. Install a new lockwasher (
Figure 51
) and the
primary drive gear nut (B,
Figure 50
).
7. Hold the flywheel with the sheave holder and
torque the primary drive gear nut to 110 N•m (81
ft.-lb.).
8. Bend the ears of the lockwasher (B,
Figure 50
)
flat against the nut.
9. Make sure the front cylinder is still set to top
dead center on the compression stroke. If necessary,
set it as follows:
a. Set the rear cylinder to TDC by rotating the
engine clockwise until the T-mark aligns with
the alternator cover cutout.
b. Rotate the crankshaft another 290° clockwise
until the I-mark on the flywheel (A,
Figure
58
) aligns with the cutout in the alternator
cover (B).
c. The timing mark (A,
Figure 59
) on the timing
gear and cam chain drive assembly (B)
should align with the center of the mounting
