11. Slide the finger of the pad spring under the re-
taining pin (B,
Figure 14
) and seat the pad spring in
the caliper.
12. Press the lower spring finger into the caliper
and install the lower retaining pin (A,
Figure 14
).
The pin must pass through the outboard pad, over
the spring finger and through the inboard pad.
13. Install a clip through the hole in the retaining
pin. The clip must sit between the caliper and the
outboard brake pad as shown in
Figure 13
.
14. Install the pad cover (
Figure 12
) onto the cali-
per.
15. Support the motorcycle with the rear wheel off
the ground. Spin the wheel and pump the brake
pedal until the pads are seated against the disc.
WARNING
Use brake fluid clearly marked DOT 4
from a sealed container. Other types
may vaporize and cause brake failure.
Always use the same brand of brake
fluid. Do not intermix brake fluids.
Many brands are not compatible with
one another.
16. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder res-
ervoir. Add brake fluid as necessary to correct the
fluid level. Install the diaphragm and top cover.
WARNING
Do not ride the motorcycle until you
are sure the brakes are operating cor
rectly with full hydraulic advantage.
If necessary, bleed the brakes as de
scribed in this chapter.
17. Test ride the motorcycle slowly at first to make
sure the brakes are operating properly.
Brake Pad Inspection
1. Inspect the brake pads (
Figure 20
for the front
and
Figure 21
for the rear) as follows:
a. Inspect the friction material for light surface
dirt, grease and oil contamination. Remove
light contamination with sandpaper. If con-
tamination has penetrated the surface, replace
the brake pads.
b. Inspect the friction material for uneven wear,
damage or contamination. Both pads should
show approximately the same amount of
