26. Pull back the universal joint boot. Roll the en-
gine forward and disengage the universal joint from
the driveshaft.
27. With an assistant, lift the engine off the jack
and remove it from the right side of the frame.
28. While the engine is removed for service, check
all of the frame engine mounts for cracks or other
damage. If any cracks are detected, take the chassis
assembly to a Yamaha dealership for further exami-
nation.
Installation
1. If they are not already installed, secure lengths
of coolant hose onto the left frame member (
Figure
15
). The hoses help protect the crankcase mating
surface during engine installation.
WARNING
The engine is very heavy and has
many sharp edges. Never place your
hands or any other part of your body
where the engine could drop and
crush your hands or arms. One or
more assistants will be required to in
stall the engine into the frame. Do not
attempt engine removal by yourself.
2. With the aid of an assistant, lift the engine and
set it into the frame from the right side (
Figure 16
).
3. While your assistant holds the engine, place a
hydraulic jack under the crankcase to support the
engine (
Figure 8
).
4. Raise the engine and roll the jack rearward until
the splines of the universal joint engage those of the
driveshaft.
5. Lower the engine slightly and tilt it to the right.
Slip the cylinder head bracket (C,
Figure 10
) onto
the cylinder head studs. Install and finger-tighten
the cylinder head bracket nuts (A,
Figure 10
).
6. Roll the engine rearward so the universal joint
completely engages the driveshaft and the lower en-
gine mount aligns with the frame mount on the right
side.
7. Install and finger-tighten the cylinder head
bracket bolts (B,
Figure 10
).
8. Set the removable frame member into place on
the right side.
9. Loosely install the upper frame member bolts
(
Figure 13
) and the lower frame member bolts (B,
Figure 3
). Finger-tighten them at this point.
10. Install the front engine bracket as follows:
a. Position the engine bracket between the
frame members.
b. Loosely install the engine bracket bolt (C,
Figure 11
and C,
Figure 12
) onto each side.
c. Install the upper through bolt (B,
Figure 11
)
and lower through bolt (B,
Figure 12
).
d. Turn the nuts (A,
Figure 11
and A,
Figure
12
) onto the through bolts.
e. Finger tighten the engine bracket bolts.
11. Install the upper and lower rear brackets into
place on the frame and loosely install the frame
bracket bolts (C and D,
Figure 14
).
12. From the left side, install the rear through bolt
(B,
Figure 14
) and loosely install the rear upper en-
gine mounting bolt (A,
Figure 14
). Make sure these
bolts pass through the upper and lower rear brack-
ets.
13. On the right side, install the nut (D,
Figure 3
)
onto the through bolt, and loosely install the rear
upper engine mounting bolt (C,
Figure 3
).
14. Tighten the bolts and nuts to the indicated
torque specifications. Follow the sequence listed
below.
a. Torque the rear engine through bolt (B,
Fig-
ure 14
) and the lower engine bracket bolts
(D) to 48 N•m (35 ft.-lb.).
b. Torque the right upper rear engine bolt (C,
Figure 3
) to 48 N•m (35 ft.-lb.).
c. Torque the left upper rear engine bolt (A,
Fig-
ure 14
) and the upper engine bracket bolts
(C) to 48 N•m (35 ft.-lb.).
d. Torque the cylinder head bracket bolts (B,
Figure 10
) to 48 N•m (35 ft.-lb.).
e. Torque the cylinder head bracket nuts (A,
Figure 10
) to 74 N•m (55 ft.-lb.).
