A brief look at DMX operation as it relates to VARI*LITE equipment can
be found in the following section.
Complete instructions for controlling VARI*LITE equipment using a
DMX-512 console can be found in the Series 300/DMX Reference Guide
(02.3004.0300).

Software that enables control of VARI*LITE luminaires from a DMX-512
console is stored in the Smart Repeater EPROMs. The Smart Repeater unit
accepts DMX-512 protocol.
Upon power-up, the Smart Repeater unit is prepared to initialize in either
VL Comm or DMX mode. As soon as it receives valid data (VL comm or
DMX), it initializes in the appropriate mode.

Make sure to terminate the Smart Repeater DMX-512 system with a DMX
terminator plug (23.9623.0177) or switch the DMX termination switch to
the TERM setting (modified units only).

The Smart Repeater unit monitors the luminaire’s status while in the DMX
mode and downloads an operating system (OS) if the fixture requests one.
This happens when a new luminaire comes on-line or whenever a
luminaire is reset. The luminaire may reset itself and request an OS
download in case of a logical error in its processing. The operating system
download is always the version which is resident in the Smart Repeater
unit’s EPROM while operating in DMX mode.
