The VL6 spot luminaire requires connection to a Smart Repeater unit (one
unit per six luminaires) in order to power-up and operate. Operation of the
VL6 luminaire is provided by software run within the Smart Repeater unit
and the luminaire itself. The luminaire connects to the Smart Repeater unit
via a S300 lamp run cable and responds to Series 300 lamp communica-
tions. 24VDC power, supplied by the Smart Repeater unit, operates all
luminaire systems except the lamp which is powered by an APS6 module.
Series 200 communications are provided by an Artisan, Artisan Plus, or
mini-Artisan2 control console to the Smart Repeater unit, which converts
the data to Series 300 protocol for use by the VL6 luminaire. Refer to the
appropriate console manual for detailed operating procedures for this lumi-
naire.
Note: Series 300 luminaires are also controllable from DMX-512
consoles. Refer to
“DMX Control Overview” on page 36
.
Internal processing functions are carried out on the luminaire’s lamp
control PCB (LCB) assembly. Voltage and data are channeled through the
Smart Repeater unit to the following luminaire main mechanical subassem-
blies:
•
Color Bulkhead Assembly
•
Dimmer Bulkhead Assembly
•
Pan and Tilt Mechanisms (PTM).

The LCB, which is mounted inside the board-side yoke leg, controls the
various luminaire functions and communicates with the console by way of
an isolated, two-way data link (RS485). The LCB contains a 68332 micro-
controller running at 16 MHz. 24 volt power is received from the Smart
Repeater unit and is channeled directly to the motor drivers. It is also
channeled to a switching regulator, which reduces it to 5 volts for powering
the LCB logic circuits. The LCB has two channels for operation of pan and
tilt servers, which use optical encoders with HP quadrature chips. The pan
and tilt motors are driven using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and
contain integrated single H-bridge drivers. Four stepper motor channels,
used for driving the filter/diffuser panels, are bi-polar type and contain
integrated dual H-bridge drivers. The LCB also contains four sensor inputs
and a diagnostic serial port. It utilizes an EPROM device to store instruc-
