Running Samples in Emission Mode
The AAnalyst 200 also performs flame emission measurements at a fixed wavelength. This
option is useful when you do not have a lamp for the element you wish to determine or if you are
determining elements such as Na, K, Ca, or Ba, which are sensitively determined by emission.
A
setup solution
containing the element being determined must be aspirated while the
spectrometer wavelength is peaked and the high voltage (gain) on the photomultiplier is set. For
each element, the concentration of the setup solution should be the same as the concentration of
the highest calibration standard. Aspirating the setup solution produces an emission signal that is
required to peak the wavelength for the maximum signal and to set the photomultiplier voltage to
the proper value.
Setting Up for Emission
Refer to the section on Standard Conditions in
Analytical Methods for Atomic Absorption
Spectrometry
(Part Number 0303-0152) to find the recommended settings for wavelength, slit
width and flame type. Use these values to make appropriate settings.

Switch on the AA200 instrument. See Chapter 6,
Operation of the Instrument

The following page is the first page displayed once you start up the system. Select the
Flame
Technique in the Startup screen. Touch the
Details
bar on the screen to get details on the
Power-on Diagnostics. In the Details dialog all entries should be in green to indicate that all
systems are OK. If all the entries are green touch
OK
in the Startup screen.

Turn on the Flame.

If you want to recall an emission method, then do so at this time. When prompted, aspirate
the highest standard of the element being determined. This setup solution must be aspirated
while the spectrometer wavelength is peaked and the high voltage (gain) on the
photomultiplier is set.
If you do not have an emission method to recall, then proceed to step 5.
