Problem Solving
Incorrect or No Beep Code
Check the following:
n
Is the speaker enabled?
n
Is the speaker cable connected to the system board?
If the system operates normally, but there was no beep, the speaker may be defective, contact your
service representative for assistance.
Record the beep code emitted by POST, and see the “Messages and Beep Codes”
section found
later in this chapter.
No Characters Appear on Screen
Check the following:
n
Is the keyboard working? Check to see if the
Num Lock
light is functioning.
n
Is the video display monitor plugged in and turned on?
n
Are the brightness and contrast controls on the video monitor properly adjusted?
n
Are the video monitor switch settings correct?
n
Is the video monitor signal cable properly installed?
n
Is the onboard video controller enabled?
If you are using an option video controller board, perform the following:
1.
Verify that the video controller board is fully seated in the system board connector.
2.
Run the SSU to disable the onboard video controller.
3.
Reboot the system for changes to take effect.
If there are still no characters on the screen after you reboot the system, contact your service
representative or authorized dealer for assistance.
POST emits one long beep and two short beeps pattern to indicate a possible problem with the
video display controller. If you do not receive a beep pattern and characters do not display, the
video display or video controller may have failed. Contact your service representative or
authorized dealer for assistance.
