Note:
The SmartDGA Instrument is designed for vertical installation. Horizontal
installation is not recommended.
Caution:
The SmartDGA Instrument must be installed in a location that is shaded
throughout the day. Rapid sunlight induced heating will negatively affect SmartDGA
measurements. See the LumaSense offered sun shade in Section 9.12 and contact us for
more information.
Caution
: The SmartDGA instrument is designed to withstand typical vibration levels
found on transformers. Certain combinations of drain valve pipe diameter and length,
combined with line frequency, may result in a mechanical harmonic which amplifies
the inherent line frequency of the transformer. This can occur in the range of 180-
240 Hz. The SmartDGA instrument continues to function but it will experience
increased noise and is subject to accelerated wear due to high ‘g’ forces. If this
behavior is observed, the installation must be modified. Changes in the pipe extension
length and/or diameter or additional mechanical support can be used to shift the
harmonic frequency higher. Alternatively, the SmartDGA instrument can be mounted
off transformer.

Confirm Valve Kit
Review your site setup and the items you received from LumaSense alongside the charts below. You
may need additional reducers to connect the equipment, so please review closely.
VA-1 (Single Valve)
Description
Thread Type
Clearance
(Distance)
Use this kit when separate
points for oil sampling and
return are not available on
the transformer. This
should only be used when
VA-2 and VA-0 options are
not available. This valve kit
is compatible with ball,
gate, and plug valves.
Not compatible with Globe
or Butterfly valves.
Confirm that the thread type
for the valve is female 1” NPT.
If it is not a 1” NPT thread
type, you will need an NPT
reducer. Verify that you have a
reducer on hand.
To Left of the Valve > 18” (45.7 cm)
To Right of the Valve > 18” (45.7 cm)
Bottom to Ground > 12” (30 cm)
Top to Obstruction > 17” (43.2 cm)
Clearance gives the installation team easier
access to the valves for workmanship. If
there is not enough free space and
obstructions cannot be moved, a new
location may need to be chosen.
