LUBRICATION 0-12
It is recommended that any additions required to bring
up the lubricant level be made using the same type of
lubricant as in the housing.
Transmission Shift Linkage (Manual
and Automatic)
Every 6,000 miles or 4 months—lubricate shift linkage
and, on Manual transmission floor control, lever contact
ing faces with water resistant EP chassis lubricant which
meets GM Specification GM 6031M.
Transmission Controls
The steering column manual shift mechanism on mod
els equipped with 3 speed transmission is factory lu
bricated and should not require periodic lubrication.
However, should the shifting effort become noticeably
greater, lubricate all linkage points with engine oil.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
POWERGLIDE TRA N SM ISSIO N
EVERY 6000 MILES—Check fluid level on dipstick.
For an accurate oil level check, drive the vehicle several
miles making frequent stops and starts to bring the trans
mission up to normal operating temperature (approxi
mately 180°-190°F.). When checking the oil, park the
vehicle on a level surface, place the selector lever in
“ Park” and with the engine running, note reading. Add
oil only with the transmission hot and the oil level at the
ADD mark. The amount of oil required under these con
ditions is one pint. DO NOT OVERFILL.
General Motors DEXRON® Automatic Transmission
Fluid, Part numbers 1050568, 1050569, 1050570 which
has been especially formulated and tested for use in your
automatic transmission is recommended. Other Auto
matic Transmission Fouids identified with the mark
DEXRON® or equivalent are also recommended.
Every 24,000 miles** (more frequently, depending on
severity of service, if vehicle is used to pull trailers,
carry full loads during high ambient temperatures, op
erate in mountainous terrain or operate under other
severe conditions) —Remove fluid from the transmission
sump and add 2 quarts U.S. measure (1-2/3 quarts Im
perial measure) of fresh fluid. Operate transmission
through all ranges and check fluid level as described
above. It is not necessary to remove the pan because a
drain plug is provided.
**This recommendation applies only to 10 Series Models.
For 20-30 Series Models drain period should be every
12,000 miles.
Powerglide Low Band Adjustment
At the first transmission fluid change, adjust the
Powerglide low band.
TURBO HYDRA-M ATIC 400 A N D TURBO
H YDRA-MATIC 350
Lubrication of your Turbo Hydra-Matic will, except for
fluid capacity and filter change listed below, follow the
Powerglide transmission recommendations. After check
ing transmission fluid level it is important that the
dipstick be pushed all the way into the fill tube.
Every 24,000 miles—after removing fluid from the
transmission sump, add approximately 7.5 pints U.S.
measure (6.25 pints Imperial measure) for the Turbo
Hydra-Matic 400 and 2-1/2 qts. U.S. measure (2 qts.
Imperial measure) for the Turbo Hydra-Matic 35Q of
fresh fluid, to return level to proper mark on the
dipstick.
Every 24,000 miles—the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 trans
mission sump strainer should be replaced.
REAR AXLES
Check lubricant level (including the inter-axle differen
tial) every 6,000 miles. When necessary, refill to level
of filler plug hole using “ GL-5” gear lubricant as shown
in the “ Gear Lubricant Viscosity Table.”
On 20 or 30 Series trucks, drain the lubricant every
24,000 miles. If the vehicle is operated in exceptionally
heavy work or at continuous high speeds, the lubricant
should be changed every 12,000 miles. It may be neces
sary to change lubricant more often if vehicle is used
off road in dusty areas.

POSITRACTION
Same as standard axle but use only the special Posi-
traction lubricant.
PROPELLER SHAFT SLIP JOINTS
Propeller shaft slip joints should be lubricated every
6,000 miles with water resistant EP chassis grease
which meets General Motors Specifications #GM 6031M.
UNIVERSAL JOINTS
Universal joints equipped with lubrication fittings
should be lubricated every 6,000 miles with water re
sistant EP chassis grease which meets General Motors
Specification #GM 6031M.
More frequent lubrication may be required on heavy
duty “ Off the Road” operations.
BRAKES
PARKING BRAKE
Every 6,000 miles clean and lubricate all parking brake
pivot points with water resistant EP chassis grease which
meets General Motors Specification #GM 6031M.
HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM
The service brake and parking brake systems are de
signed for braking performance under a wide range of
driving conditions even when the vehicle is loaded to its
full rated vehicle load.
CAUTION:
Driving through deep water may
affect brake performance. To assure normal
operation after being wetted, service brakes
must be dried. To dry them quickly, lightly
apply the brakes while maintaining a slow for
ward speed until brake performance returns to
normal.
