Cable Substitution
Balcrank Spectrum cables have been specifi ed and confi gured to allow the simplest, most trouble-free
installation of equipment and the most reliable, assured peak performance in operation. In some situations,
it may be necessary to use cable other than Balcrank’s. It is the installer’s responsibilty to assure that any
cable substitutions conform with or exceed the requirements of our original equipment cables. Use the detail
descriptions below to be sure that all substitutions meet our requirements. Failure to use our cables, or our
specifi ed equals, may jeapordize the Balcrank warranty for the installed Spectrum system.
Use “Substitute Impulse Meter Cable” specifi cations below to replace Model 3122-xxx. Note that 3122-xxx
contains 4 wire pairs (for 4 meter), whereas the substitute requires one cable run for each installed meter.
Additionally, cables must be pre-identifi ed with a tag (meter 1, meter 2, etc) before making wire runs to be
sure correct attachments are made at the console. Unique wire color coding in our own Model 3122-xxx
prevents this necessity and risk.
Substitute Impulse Meter Cable (console to meter, run one cable per impulse meter)
18 gage, 2 conductor; unshielded stranded copper wire; 300 V 80 deg C; color code black, red;
30 mil PVC wire cover, 30 mil PVC grey cable jacket, UV resistant for outdoor service.
Use “Substitute Solenoid Cable” specifi cations below to directly replace Model 3123-xxx.
Substitute Solenoid Cable (smart controller to solenoid valves, run one cable per valve)
18 gage, 2 conductor; unshielded stranded copper wire; 300 V 80 deg C; color code black, red;
30 mil PVC wire cover, 30 mil PVC grey cable jacket, UV resistant for outdoor service.
Use “Substitute Power Cable” and “Substitute Signal Cable” specifi cations below in combination to replace
Model 3121-xxx.

16 gage, 2 conductor; unshielded stranded copper wire; 300 V 80 deg C; color code black, red;
30 mil PVC wire cover, 30 mil PVC grey cable jacket, UV resistant for outdoor service.
Substitute Signal Cable (console to smart controllers and between smart controllers)
18 gage, 2 conductor shielded twisted pair; stranded copper wire;
300 V 80 deg C; color code blue w/white stripe, white w/blue stripe;
conforming to RS-485;
Aluminum mylar shield with 24 gage bare drain wire;
30 mil polyethylene wire cover, 30 mil PVC grey cable jacket, UV resistant for outdoor service.
