Align the probe and stir/freeze wire as follows:
a. The 4C3 should be disconnected from the power source, the
back cover removed and the sample probe disconnected as
instructed in steps 3.a through 3.c.
b. Hold the circular end of the probe and stir/freeze wire alignment
tool firmly up against the bottom of the inner core of the man-
drel with the footed face of the alignment tool toward the stir/
freeze wire, as shown in figure 10.
c. Align the probe against the raised V centerline on the footed
face of the alignment tool (see figure 11).
d. As necessary, loosen the probe setscrew, manually raise or
lower the probe within the mandrel and gently tighten the probe
setscrew when the glass bottom of the probe is exactly even
with LEVEL B as shown on figure 11 (overtightening will
crack or distort the thin plastic of the mandrel). Recheck and
readjust the probe position as necessary.
e. If aligning a metal probe, bend the metal probe stem gently by
hand, as necessary, to align the probe along the raised V center-
line of the probe alignment tool.
If aligning a non-metalic probe, rotate the probe so that any cur-
vature in the probe is in the back-to-front direction (parallel to
the stir wire action).
f. The bottom of the stir/freeze wire should be even with align-
ment tool LEVEL B the tip of the probe. As necessary, loosen
the stir/freeze wire setscrews in the clapper and reset the stir/
freeze wire. Re-tighten the stir/freeze wire setscrews. After
re-tightening the setscrews, bend the stir/freeze wire, as nec-
essary, so that the wire surface nearest the probe is next to the
vertical edge of LEVEL B as shown in figure 11.
g. Reverse steps 3.a through 3.c to restore the instrument to oper-
ating condition. Each time the 4C3 is turned on, it follows the
power-up sequence described in Chapter 1 to the point where
