B. Hazardous material cautions
• WARNING : Handle all biohazardous materials according to estab-
lished good laboratory practices and follow your institution’s expo-
sure control plan. Universal precautions is an approach to infection
control, where animal body fluids and proteins are treated as if
known to be infectious. Use personal protective equipment such as
gloves, gowns, etc., to prevent exposure. Store biohazardous mate-
rials in regulated waste containers and dispose of these materials in
a safe and acceptable manner that is in compliance with all country,
state and local requirements.
CAUTION T he heat transfer fluid contains hazardous chemicals.
Consult the safety data sheet (SDS) and use appropri-
ate personal protective equipment.
• Heat transfer fluid can become contaminated with sample mate-
rial which may be considered a biohazard. Use appropriate cau-
tions during removal and cleaning of sample tubes after testing
to prevent heat transfer fluid remaining on the tube exterior from
contacting personnel or the instrument surface.
• If a biohazardous material is spilled on or inside the equipment,
decontaminate the equipment using a 1% bleach solution, or as out-
lined by those policies and procedures established within your insti-
tution.
• To avoid injury or fire hazard, do not operate this product in an
explosive atmosphere.
C. Sample preparation
No further sample preparation is required. If whole milk is to be
tested and has separated, sampling from the low-fat portion gener-
ally gives more repeatable results; congealed liquids can randomly
cause premature crystallization of the sample, also referred to as a
sample pre-freeze.
