This chapt er shows you how t o configur e layer 2 pr ot ocol t unneling on t he Sw it ch.

28.1.1 What You Can Do

Use t he La y e r 2 Pr ot ocol Tu n n e l scr een (

t unneling on t he Swit ch and specify a MAC address w it h w hich t he Swit ch uses t o encapsulat e t he
layer 2 pr ot ocol packet s by r eplacing t he dest inat ion MAC addr ess in t he packet s.

28.1.2 What You Need to Know

Layer 2 pr ot ocol t unneling ( L2PT) is used on t he ser vice pr ovider 's edge devices.

L2PT allow s edge sw it ches ( 1  and 2  in t he follow ing figur e)  t o t unnel layer  2 STP ( Spanning Tr ee
Pr ot ocol) , CDP ( Cisco Discover y Prot ocol)  and VTP ( VLAN Tr unking Pr ot ocol)  packet s bet w een
cust om er  sw it ches ( A, B and C in t he following figur e)  connect ed t hr ough t he ser vice pr ovider ’s
net w or k. The edge sw it ch encapsulat es layer  2 pr ot ocol packet s w it h a specific MAC addr ess befor e
sending t hem  acr oss t he ser vice pr ovider ’s net w or k t o ot her  edge swit ches.
