52.1 IPv6 Neighbor Table Overview
This chapt er int r oduces t he I Pv6 neighbor t able.
An I Pv6 host is r equir ed t o have a neighbor t able. I f t her e is an addr ess t o be r esolved or ver ified,
t he Swit ch sends out a neighbor solicit at ion m essage. When t he Swit ch r eceives a neighbor
adver t isem ent in r esponse, it st or es t he neighbor ’s link- layer addr ess in t he neighbor t able. You can
also m anually cr eat e a st at ic I Pv6 neighbor ent r y using t he Ba sic Se t t in g > I Pv 6 > I Pv 6

When t he Sw it ch needs t o send a packet , it fir st consult s ot her t able t o det er m ine t he next hop.
Once t he next hop I Pv6 address is known, t he Sw it ch looks int o t he neighbor t able t o get t he link-
layer addr ess and sends t he packet w hen t he neighbor is r eachable. I f t he Swit ch cannot find an
ent r y in t he neighbor t able or t he st at e for t he neighbor is not r eachable, it st ar t s t he addr ess
r esolut ion pr ocess. This helps r educe t he num ber of I Pv6 solicit at ion and adver t isem ent m essages.
