IPv6 Addressing
The 128- bit I Pv6 addr ess is w r it t en as eight 16- bit hexadecim al blocks separat ed by colons ( : ) . This

I Pv6 addr esses can be abbr eviat ed in t w o ways:

Leading zer os in a block can be om it t ed. So

Any num ber of consecut ive blocks of zer os can be replaced by a double colon. A double colon can
only appear once in an I Pv6 addr ess. So

Prefix and Prefix Length
Sim ilar t o an I Pv4 subnet m ask, I Pv6 uses an addr ess pr efix t o r epr esent t he net w or k addr ess. An
I Pv6 pr efix lengt h specifies how m any m ost significant bit s ( st ar t fr om t he left ) in t he addr ess
com pose t he net w or k addr ess. The pr efix lengt h is w r it t en as “ / x” w her e x is a num ber. For
exam ple,
2001:db8:1a2b:15::1a2f:0/32
m eans t hat t he fir st 32 bit s (
2001:db8
) is t he subnet pr efix.
Link-local Address
A link- local addr ess uniquely ident ifies a device on t he local net w or k ( t he LAN) . I t is sim ilar t o a
“ pr ivat e I P addr ess” in I Pv4. You can have t he sam e link- local addr ess on m ult iple int er faces on a
device. A link- local unicast addr ess has a pr edefined pr efix of fe80: : / 10. The link- local unicast
addr ess for m at is as follow s.
