32.1 Green Ethernet Overview

IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE)
I f EEE is enabled, bot h sides of a link suppor t EEE and t her e is no t raffic, t he por t ent er s Low Pow er
I dle ( LPI ) m ode. LPI m ode t ur ns off som e funct ions of t he physical layer ( becom es quiet ) t o save
pow er. Per iodically t he por t t ransm it s a REFRESH signal t o allow t he link par t ner t o keep t he link
alive. When t her e is t raffic t o be sent , a WAKE signal is sent t o t he link par t ner t o r et ur n t he link t o
act ive m ode.
Auto Power Down
Au t o Pow e r D ow n t ur ns off alm ost all funct ions of t he por t ’s physical layer funct ions w hen t he link
is dow n, so t he por t only uses pow er t o check for a link up pulse fr om t he link par t ner. Aft er t he link
up pulse is det ect ed, t he por t wakes up fr om Au t o Pow e r D ow n and operat es nor m ally.
Short Reach
Tradit ional Et her net t ransm it s all dat a w it h enough pow er t o r each t he m axim um cable lengt h.
Shor t er cables lose less pow er, so Sh or t Re a ch saves pow er by adj ust ing t he t ransm it pow er of
each por t accor ding t o t he lengt h of cable at t ached t o t hat por t .
