Kerning Compression – This option instructs the software to adjust the space between
letters to ensure the line fits within the frame width. The problem with this option is that it
usually causes the text to space too tightly such that the letters will run together when they
are engraved. This option is better suited to vinyl lettering or printing than it is to
engraving layouts.

Word Kerning Compression
– Similar to Kerning Compression except the software will
try to adjust the space between words (groups of letters) instead of between each
character. Also not recommended for the same reasons as discussed for Kerning
Compression.
The “Applies To” list box tells the Vision Pro how the use the compression option with the
text in the paragraph. You have three choices for this:

Each Line Individually
– With this option, the compression is applied to each line without
regard to any other lines in the paragraph. This option can often cause different
compression amounts to be applied to each line in the paragraph depending on the length
of each line. Since this will cause the text appearance to vary, it is not normally selected
as an option.

All Lines Equally – This option will cause the compression value that is applied to the
longest line in the paragraph to be applied to ALL lines in the paragraph. With this option,
if one long line in the paragraph caused that line to compress to 60% of normal, then all
lines in the paragraph would condense to 60%, regardless of the actual length of each
line. This option is used when you desire a very uniform character width so that all letters
look the same in the paragraph.

Equal Height Lines
– This is the preferred option and should be used as the default. This
option causes all lines that share the same character height to be compared and the
compression value for the longest line is used for all lines of that letter height. This
provides a degree of uniformity in the layout yet still allows normal line widths for other text
that is not the same size. The software assumes that all lines in the paragraph that share
the same size are related and should look the same. This normally works very well, and
you can work around this compression option for a line that you do not want to share the
value with other lines by changing the character height very slightly (i.e. .002”) so it will not
take on the compression value of the rest of the text.
Word Wrap can be turned on so that the software will automatically add new lines as you
type within a frame when the margin is reached and the text compression exceeds the value
specified in the dialog. Word wrap can be used with any compression option and is turned
on automatically if the compression option is set to None. The Hanging Indents options
works with word wrap to control how the paragraph is placed in the layout. Feel free to
experiment with these options to get an idea of how they work and how they can be used in
your layouts.
Vertical Spacing and Compression Options – These options work very
similarly to the Horizontal Justification options discussed above. You can set the vertical
spacing to Top Spacing, Center Spacing, or Bottom Spacing which controls how the text is
placed in relation to the anchor point for Free text or in relation to the frame for Frame text.
