Splitting
Objects into
Components
You ȱ can ȱ convert ȱ a ȱ complex ȱ object ȱ to ȱ an ȱ assembly ȱ of ȱ component ȱ parts. ȱ To ȱ do ȱ
so, ȱ you ȱ split ȱ the ȱ stl ȱ file ȱ that ȱ represents ȱ the ȱ object ȱ into ȱ a ȱ group ȱ of ȱ separate ȱ stl ȱ
files, ȱ each ȱ one ȱ representing ȱ a ȱ component. ȱ (This ȱ is ȱ referred ȱ to ȱ in ȱ the ȱ Objet ȱ
Studio ȱ interface ȱ as ȱ separating ȱ the ȱ object ȱ into ȱ shells.) ȱ You ȱ can ȱ then ȱ assign ȱ a ȱ
model ȱ material ȱ to ȱ each ȱ stl ȱ file, ȱ and ȱ you ȱ can ȱ save ȱ the ȱ newly Ȭ created ȱ
assembly ȱ as ȱ an ȱ objdf ȱ file.
To split an object into an assembly of component parts:
1. If ȱ the ȱ object ȱ is ȱ not ȱ displayed, ȱ place ȱ it ȱ on ȱ the ȱ build ȱ tray ȱ by ȱ inserting ȱ its ȱ stl ȱ
file ȱ (see ȱ “Placing ȱ Objects ȱ on ȱ the ȱ Build ȱ Tray” ȱ on ȱ page 10).
The ȱ object ȱ appears—on ȱ the ȱ build ȱ tray ȱ and ȱ in ȱ the ȱ model ȱ tree ȱ pane—as ȱ a ȱ
single ȱ part. ȱ It ȱ is ȱ assigned, ȱ by ȱ default, ȱ the ȱ “primary” ȱ model ȱ material. ȱ (If ȱ
Objet ȱ Studio ȱ is ȱ configured ȱ with ȱ a ȱ secondary ȱ material, ȱ you ȱ can ȱ assign ȱ
it—or ȱ a ȱ digital ȱ material—to ȱ the ȱ entire ȱ object. ȱ This ȱ is ȱ explained ȱ in ȱ
“Model Ȭ Material ȱ Settings” ȱ on ȱ page 20.)

Note: There is no need to resize or arrange the object on the build tray at
this time.
2. With ȱ the ȱ object ȱ selected:

A ȱ dialog ȱ box ȱ opens ȱ in ȱ which ȱ you ȱ can ȱ specify ȱ where ȱ to ȱ save ȱ the ȱ
component ȱ stl ȱ files. ȱ (By ȱ default, ȱ Objet ȱ Studio ȱ offers ȱ to ȱ save ȱ the ȱ new ȱ files ȱ
in ȱ a ȱ folder ȱ in ȱ the ȱ same ȱ location ȱ as ȱ the ȱ original ȱ stl ȱ file.)

Objet ȱ Studio ȱ splits ȱ the ȱ object ȱ into ȱ an ȱ assembly ȱ of ȱ component ȱ parts, ȱ each ȱ
a ȱ separate ȱ stl ȱ file ȱ (“shell”).
