POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
The power supply circuit (see Power Supply Board A6 (AY40-005T) Schematic
Diagram in Chapter 6, DIAGRAMS) consists of four power supplies that provide
the power needed to the control circuits. Two power supplies (+15VDC and
+48VDC) are switching power supplies. The other two power supplies (+24VDC
and -15VDC) are linear.
+48 VDC Power Supply
The +48 VDC and +15 VDC power supplies work with the same boost con-
cept design, but some of the components are different between the power
supplies.
The +48 VDC Power Supply consists of Bridge Rectifier DB1 that produces a
43 VDC (approximately) output (TP2), which is filtered by capacitor C2. The
43 VDC is chopped by transistor Q1 with inductor L1 in series. When Q1
turns off, the inductor and the DC voltage across C2 supplies voltage to the
output. The output is the sum of both voltages. Therefore, the output volt-
age will never be lower than
+43 VDC (neglecting the voltages across compo-
nents). The time that transistor Q1 is on depends on the input DC voltage
and the output load. Pulse-Width Modulator (PWM) U1 samples the output
voltage, and it controls Q1 on time to maintain constant output voltage. The
output voltage is adjusted to +48 VDC (TP3) with R17 in case there is a prob-
lem supplying the filament current as a result of long length high-voltage
(H.V.) cables. The +48 VDC output can be adjusted to supply adequate fila-
ment current. The maximum adjusted voltage should not 52 VDC.
+15 VDC Power Supply
The +15 VDC power supply works using the same boost concept design as
the +48 VDC power supply. The +15 VDC Power Supply bridge rectifier DB4
produces a DC voltage output, which is filtered by capacitor C18. The DC
voltage should be approxi13 VDC (TP10). The DC voltage is
chopped by transistor Q2 with inductor L2 in series. When the transistor
turns off, the inductor and the DC voltage across C18 supplies voltage to the
output. The time that transistor Q1 is on depends on the input DC voltage
and the output load. PWM U2 samples the output voltage, and it controls Q2
on time to maintain constant output voltage. The output of the +15 VDC
supply has a resettable fuse (F2). When the load exceeds the limit of the
fuse, the output shuts off until the overload is removed.
+24 VDC Power Supply
The +24 VDC power supply uses a linear adjustable regulator that produces
regulated 24VDC (at TP8). The input DC voltage (approximately 35V) to the
regulator comes from bridge rectifier DB4 and filter capacitor C15.
The power supply that produces the -15VDC uses a linear fix output regulator
that produces the regulated -15VDC (TP8). The input negative DC voltage
(TP7 approximately -21V) to the regulator comes from the bridge rectifier
DB2 and filter capacitor C13.
