increase i n engine speed or lood w i l l enlarge the
effective choke area until maximum a i r valve lift, since the oir volve l i f t is
proportional to the rate of air flowing beneath i t . Therefore, air velocity and
pressure drop across the
orifice remain approximately constant at a l l engine speeds.
As the a i r valve rises, i t withdrows the tapered metering needle held i n its base from
the
orificie, so that fuel flow
i s
increased proportionate to the greater oir flow.
The metering needle is
varioble and machined t o very close limits. I t provides a
mixture ratio for
speeds and
i n l i n e with engine requirements that are
determined by exhaustive tests on bench and rood during original manufacture. To
maintain correct results, i t i s essential that only the recommended needle
i s
Compensator
Testing has shown the need for a temperature compensator, operating over a wide
range o f a i r valve lift, to cater for
mixture strength variations caused through
heat transfer t o the carburetter castings.
An air flow channel i s employed which permits some of the air passing through the
carburetters to by-pass the bridge section. W i t h the introduction of this air into the
mixing chamber, the air valve, i n order t o maintain depression on its downstream
side, rides i n a lower position, thus giving a
fuel flow annulus. To adjust the
quantity of air by-passed, a bimetallic blade i s used to regulate the movement o f a
tapered plug
.
Two screws attach the temperature compensator assembly to the carburetter and two
seal are provided to ensure that no
can occur at the joint with the main body.
