9.2.2 Cleaning the batteries
¾
Clean the battery, if required.
¾
Remove possible oxidation from the terminal
clamps with a brush.
¾
If necessary apply pole grease only to the
transition edge between pole and battery
housing.
¾
Keep the ventilation bores in the plugs open.
9.2.3 Checking the fluid level in
the batteries
¾
Check the fluid level / acid level in the batteries
at regular intervals, top up if required.
9.2.4 Installing and connecting
batteries
¾
Always connect the batteries with correct
polarity.
¾
When installing a battery always connect the
plus cable to the plus pole, then connect the
minus cable to the minus pole.
¾
Failure to comply with the correct polarity
between battery and three-phase alternator
causes severe damage.
9.3 Three-phase alternator
¾
When working in the electric system discon-
nect the minus cables from the batteries first,
to avoid damage.
¾
Protect the cable contacts of the plus cables
against accidental contact with the battery
contacts.

9.4 Starter
¾
When working in the electric system discon-
nect the minus cables from the batteries first,
to avoid damage.
¾
Protect the cable contacts of the plus cables
against accidental contact with the battery
contacts.
Possible faults and proposed remedies
Loose, dirty or corroded cable connections:
•
Clean the cable connections on the starter
and tighten the connections.
•
Clean the earth cable on the engine and
tighten the connections.
Battery power too low
•
Check for voltage drop on batteries, if neces-
sary recharge the battery.
Discharged battery
•
Charge the battery.
Use of incorrect engine oil viscosity
•
Use correct engine oil according to specification.
Starter safety relay defective:
•
Replace the relay
