Repair and Service Manual

Read all of Section B and this section before attempting any procedure. Pay particular attention to all Notes, Cautions and Warnings

on page H-7). Remove the front drive shaft (Ref Front
Drive Shaft Replacement section in FRONT SUSPEN-
SION AND STEERING). Remove rear drive shaft (Ref
Rear Drive Shaft Replacement section in REAR AXLE
AND SUSPENSION).

Hold the bolts (item 1) using 9/16" wrench and remove
the nut (item 2) using 9/16" socket securing the transmis-
sion (item 10) to the sub frame (Ref Fig. 20 on page H-
14). Remove the washer (item 3). Remove the set screw
(item 4) using 1/4" wrench and remove the governor
lever (item 5). Hold the bolt (item 6) using 9/16" wrench
and using a 9/16" socket, remove the nut (item 7) secur-
ing the accelerator/governor bracket (item 8) to transmis-
sion. Remove the washer (item 9). Remove the
transmission (item 10).

Installation of the transmission is the reverse of disas-
sembly using new lock nuts.

Apply anti seize compound on all splines and appropriate
commercially available thread lock for bolts before instal-
lation.

Tighten the hardware per torque specification table given
below.

Checking Transmission (Transfer Case)
Lubrication Level

The transmission is provided with an oil level check/fill
plug (item 1) located on passenger side at rear of case
(Ref Fig. 21 on page H-14). Unless leakage is evident,
an annual check is sufficient..

Clean the fill plug (item 1) and area around it. Remove
plug. Correct lubricant level is just below bottom of
threaded hole.
