Safety Practices and Hazards
The Analytik Jena PlasmaQuant ICP-MS (ICP-MS) and accessories have been carefully
designed so that when used properly it is an accurate, fast, flexible, and safe analytical
system. If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the
protection provided by the equipment may be impaired. Information on safety
practices appears throughout the documentation provided with all instruments and
accessories. Before using or servicing the instrument or accessories, you must
thoroughly read these safety practices. Observe all relevant safety practices at all
times.
Operation of the ICP-MS involves the use of compressed gases, high voltage radio
frequency energy, and hazardous materials, including corrosive fluids and flammable
liquids. When installed and used properly, the ICP-MS and its accessories provide an
accurate, fast, flexible, and safe analytical system. If you install and use the equipment
in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the
equipment may be impaired. This can cause death or serious injury to personnel, or
severe damage to equipment and property.
This chapter describes the general and specific hazards you will encounter as you
interact with the ICP-MS and prescribes safety practices that can help protect you and
your equipment. Before installing and using the instrument or accessories, you must
thoroughly read these safety practices. Observe all relevant safety practices at all
times.
The safety practices described below are provided to help you operate the instrument
safely.
The spectrometer incorporates interlocks and covers which are designed to prevent
inadvertent contact with any of the potential hazards. It is good practice, however, to
develop safe working habits which do not depend upon the correct operation of the
interlocks for safe operation. It is essential that no interlock is bypassed, damaged, or
removed.
NOTE
The safety information presented in this manual is for the ICP-MS. Refer to the
manuals of the other Products/Accessories to ensure their safe and efficient
operation. Address any questions you have about the safe and proper use of the
instrument to Analytik Jena.
