Using 4-Wire (Not AurorANet) RS-485 Daisy-Chain
AurorANet is Vicon’s proprietary 2-wire RS-485 protocol. Throughout this manual, any reference to
“AurorANet” implies the Vicon RS-485 2-wire communication (not 4-wire). The example discussed here is a
special case with regard to the typical RS-485 connections to AurorAcorDs; this special case is 4-wire RS-
485 instead of AurorANet 2-wire RS-485.
Note: In all AurorANet configurations, the AurorANet termination box may be used. The 4-wire RS-485 daisy-chain
discussed in this section requires the use of the RS-232/RS-422 termination box. You will not use the AurorANet
termination box to make the connections shown to the left.
Before you begin making connections, see the Reference chapter of this manual and set your jumpers as
shown for “4-wire RS-485”, paying attention to whether each AurorAcorD is at the end of the communications
line or in the middle.
In the example below, AurorAcorDs are connected to the host PC. Connect the converter’s tr/- to
r/- of the supplied RJ-45 termination box, respectively, of the AurorAcorD daisy-chain. Connect
tr/- to the converter’s r/-, respectively. Plug the 9-pin D-shell end of the Vicon converter into
the PC’s com port.
Daisy chain AurorAcorDs using the 4-wire RS-485 connections below. Connect like signals together; for
example, RS-485 R+ to RS-485 R+ from one AurorAcorD to another. Continue in the same manner with the
other signals. Make sure that you have selected “RS-485” as the Type on the appropriate Serial Port screen.

Using an RS-232/RS-422 converter and a Vicon
Distribution Line Control, you can connect AurorAcorDs in
a star configuration using RS-422. The supplied RS-
232/RS-422 termination box is shown in the previous
section.
Plug the 9-pin D-shell end of the Vicon converter into the
PC’s com port. Use the distribution line control and
converter manuals for connection information between
these two devices.
