19.0 THEORY OF OPERATION
The Scaler supports up to 10 inputs and when an operator selects an input, the
Scaler routes the video from the selected connector to the correct decoder for the
signal type.
The RGB and YUV inputs are routed to a triple 8bit analog to digital converter
and then passed to the input of the scaling engine. The synchronization pulses
from these signals are buffered and passed to the scaling engine and, in the
case of composite sync, sync on green or sync on Y, the sync pulses are
separated from the video and then passed to the scaling engine.
The Composite video and S-video signals are routed to video decoders with
adaptive filtering and color correction that convert the video signal to CCIR656
video data which is then passed to the scaling engine. The SDI input is
deserialized and converted to the same CCIR656 video data. Synchronization
information is extracted from the CCIR data by the sync processing circuit of the
scaling engine and then used in the same way as the RGB synchronization
signals.
When a Genlock input is selected, the initial processing is handled the same way
as the program input for Composite, S-video and SDI input types––by decoding
to CCIR data. RGB and YUV data are handled slightly differently; the signal is
not converted to digital––it’s kept in the analog format.
For a Preview input, the signal is simply routed and then buffered before being
output.
The input video processing circuit of the scaling engine converts the video data
to YUV 4:2:2, scales to a suitable internal resolution and stores the image in the
double-buffered frame store memory. Motion compensation or 3:2 pull down is
applied before storing in memory.
If the Scaler is in a Genlock mode, genlock information is used to generate the
signals needed to read the data from the double-buffered memory and the output
sync signals. If the Scaler is not in genlock mode, the selected output resolution
is used to generate signals required to read the data from the double buffer
memory.
The double buffer output is then scaled to the proper resolution and sent to the
correct encoder. For RGB and YUV signals, the output of the scaling engine is
fed into a triple digital to analog converter. For the CV/YC and SDI outputs the
Scaler engine outputs CCIR656 video data that are then used by the Video
encoder for CV and YC and as serial data for SDI.
