Operation
2.1 Short
Introduction
The following sections describe how to operate the NRT by way of a few selected examples. The main
functions are described in detail together with the control keys. Where no explanations are given, please
refer to Section 2.2, Basic Operating Functions, as well as to the description of the menus starting from
Section 2.3.
It is assumed that only one sensor is connected and initialization has been completed successfully. The
operation with several sensors is described in Section 2.1.7.
2.1.1
Correct Connection of Sensor
The sensors for the NRT (NRT-Z and NAP-Z) have to be connected between source and load. They
measure the power flux in both directions, ie from the source to the load (forward power) and conversely
(reverse power). The ratio of forward and reverse power is a measure for the matching of the load which
can be expressed as standing wave ratio (SWR), return loss or reflection coefficient.

Forward Direction
To increase the dynamic range for the
reflection measurements, some of the
sensors of type NRT-Z are of unsym-
metrical design, ie it has been taken
into account that the reverse power is
usually much smaller than the forward
power. These sensors should therefore
normally be connected into the test set
as specified on the type label.
2.1.2 Default
Setup
With a few keystrokes a default setup can be compiled on the NRT which is usually sufficient for many
applications (see section 2.5.2).
The setup includes the following measurement functions:
•
Average value (AVG) of forward power (FWD) in W
•
Standing wave ratio (SWR) of load
(left part of display)
(right part of display)
with the following settings:
−
Correction of measured value with default frequency,
−
Results referred to load,
−
Automatic scaling of bargraph.
−
Cable attenuations not taken into account
