Loading New Firmware into Basic Unit
Like for many instruments nowadays, a firmware update can also be made for the NRT basic unit via
the serial interface. Since it is not necessary to replace an EPROM, the instrument need not be opened.
The NRT is fitted with an RS-232 interface as standard. The 9-pin connector is provided on the rear
panel. Using a null modem cable (order no. 1050.0346.029, the NRT can be connected to any PC (386,
486, Pentium).
The characteristics of the serial interface are described in detail in Appendix A, Interfaces. Preparing the
null modem cable is also described in detail there. The settings described for the transfer parameters
are irrelevant both for the host PC and the target NRT, since for the programming (also referred to as
flashup) fixed transfer parameters are set on the NRT and in the flashup programs.
Note:
Please note that a successful connection between PC and NRT basic unit can only be es-
tablished with the aid of a standard null modem cable (see Appendix A, RS-232-C inter-
face). If the cable is not correctly wired, the update may not be correctly performed.
The firmware for the NRT basic unit is supplied together with the flashup program in the form of a
packed, self-extracting archive with the file name NRTxxx.EXE. The string xxx represents the version
number of the software.
Installing the flashup software on the PC:
½
First generate a new, empty directory on drive c:\ :
(e.g. C:\NRT).
½
Copy the file NRTxxx.EXE to directory C\:NRT:
½
Next, execute the program file (under DOS or Windows).
This unpacks the file into the current directory; the installation of the programming software
is finished.
The directory ...\NRT should now contain the following files in addition to the NRTxxx.EXE file:
FLASHPRO.EXE
MS-DOS program establishing the connection to the target (NRT). It trans-
fers the new program version (NRT.BIN) to the NRT and causes the in-
strument to load the transferred data as permanent data into the program
memory.
NRT.BIN
Binary file containing the firmware to be loaded into the program memory
(flash EPROM) of the NRT.
NRT_TRA.BIN
Auxiliary program required for installing the new firmware version and
transferred first to the NRT.
NRT40_1.CNF
Configuration file containing all NRT-specific settings for the serial interface
COM1 of the PC.
NRT40_2.CNF
Configuration file containing all NRT-specific settings for the serial interface
COM2 of the PC.
NRT.TXT
This file is optional.
It contains supplements to the manual and a list of the new features and
improvements relative to previous firmware versions.
