9.4.1 Changing Batteries and Editing the Battery Type
On your 831C, go to
Tools
3
System Properties
, then press the top-right
softkey (
//*
) until the
Power
tab displays.
When changing batteries, the
Battery Type
must match the type of batteries
you’re installing. The 831C can be powered by alkaline, 1.5V lithium, or nickel-
metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.
CAUTION
Do not mix alkaline and NiMH batteries.
CAUTION
Do not mix batteries from different manufacturers.
CAUTION
Do not replace only 1, 2, or 3 batteries. Replace all 4 batteries when
installing fresh cells.
CAUTION
Do not change the batteries without also setting the Battery Type (as
shown in this section). To prevent serious damage, injury, or fire, edit the
Bat

tery Type
setting each time you install a different type of battery. When the
battery type is set to NiMH, the internal charger is enabled. This can result in
fire or injury with alkaline or lithium batteries.

Select the
Battery Type
that matches the batteries you’re installing.

Install 4 new batteries. For details, see

If you’ve installed NiMH batteries and want to charge them in the meter, enable
the Charging feature.
Enabling Charging for NiMH Batteries

Use the included USB cable to connect to a wall outlet. For best
results, turn the meter off while charging.

9.4.2 Setting Auto-Off
On your 831C, go to

Auto-Off
is the period the instrument stays on with no activity. Any of the
following actions keep the meter on and restart the Auto-Off period:

Button press
•
Running a measurement
•
USB communication
•
Remote communication
