PTO general considerations
If equipment that requires power from the engine to be operated is installed on the
vehicle, an additional power supply is required. This can be effected through the
power take-off (PTO) responsible for transmitting the engine power to the equip
-
ment on the body that does the work, as in the case of dumps, compressors, etc.
The PTO is therefore the link between the power source (engine) and the final work
(lifting a load, turning a drum, etc.)
There are other possible connections to vehicle power sources, such as the electri
-
cal system.
See chapter 7.3 "Additional electricity consumers".
The HMC vehicles are prepared from factory for the installation of various addi
-
tional energy consumers. The Body Builder can also install all the components need
-
ed in the vehicle later. However, as the subsequent installation of a PTO could be
too costly and could seriously disrupt the smooth functioning of the vehicle, HMC
recommends ordering the installation of the PTO from factory.
Generally, the PTO should be chosen depending on the hours of use and the power
to be supplied. That is, the features of the PTO depend on the needs and uses of
the body that is to be installed.
To specify the PTO, it is important to choose the best combination between engine,
gearbox, PTO and hydraulic pump, or any other actuator. A properly optimised sys
-
tem offers good performance features, noise, weight and cost.
NOTICE
The Body Builder, the owner of the vehicle and HMC must work as a team to
select the PTO that best suits the type of vehicle and the function that will
develop the body for the work undertaken.
CAUTION
A PTO that has been incorrectly installed in the vehicle will invalidate the war
-
ranty, in the case of faults or breakages resulting from the installation.
NOTICE
The PTO installed in the vehicle must be supplied or approved by HMC. If the PTO
is supplied for other brands, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed.
