Section 10-6 - Probe Maintenance
10-6-5
Returning and Shipping of Defective Probes
WARNING: Always disinfect a defective probe before returning it to the manufacturer. Be sure
to tag the probe as being disinfected.
CAUTION: To help protect yourself from blood-borne diseases when cleaning and handling
probes, wear approved, non-allergic disposable gloves.
Equipment being returned must be properly clean and free of blood and other potentially infectious
contaminants.
GEMS policy states that body fluids must be properly removed from any part or equipment prior to
shipment. GEMS employees, as well as customers, are responsible for ensuring that parts/equipment
have been properly decontaminated prior to shipment. Under no circumstances should a part or
equipment be shipped before being visibly clean and properly disinfected.
The purpose of the regulation is to protect employees in the transportation industry, as well as the
persons who will receive and/or open the package.
NOTE:
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has ruled that “items that were saturated and/or dripping
with human blood that are now caked with dried blood; or which were used or intended for use in patient
care” are “regulated medical waste” for transportation purposes and must be transported as a
hazardous material.
