Glossary-4
Clear To Send (CTS)
A V.24 (EIA232) signal sent from the modem
to the local computer, usually indicating that
the modem is ready to receive data from the
local computer.
Data compression
A technique that combines duplicate characters
and recodes characters based on the frequency
and/or order in which they appear, to achieve
increased throughput.
Data link layer
The part of MNP that handles the actual
exchange of data between the two modems.
Data Carrier Detect (DCD)
See Carrier Detect.
Default setting
A setting that the modem always uses unless
otherwise specified.
Digital transmission
Transmission method by which data is sent as
a stream of electrical pulses. Each pulse is an
off or on electrical current that represents a 0 or
1 data bit. Computers and terminals use digital
transmission.
Distinctive Ring
A service available from some telephone
companies that allows the detection of four
types of different rings. Distinctive Ring works
before the modem goes off hook. When
available in a phone service area, it allows the
assignment of several phone numbers to one
phone line. For each phone number assigned to
the same line, a different ring signal is sent to
the modem.
Data Set Ready (DSR)
A V.24 (EIA232) signal sent from the modem
to the local computer, usually indicating that
the modem is ready to establish a connection.
DataTerminal Ready (DTR)
A V.24 (EIA232) signal sent from the local
computer to the modem, usually indicating that
the local computer is ready to begin
communication.
Dumb mode
The state in which the modem does not
recognize commands or send result codes.
