Reliable operation
An MNP or LAPM error-free connection with
another MNP or LAPM modem.
Remote system
Any computer with which you communicate
using the modem and a communications line.
Result code
A message the modem sends to the local
computer containing information about the
state of the modem.
Retrain
A method of re-establishing a better quality
connection when the quality of the current
connection causes data to be continuously
retransmitted.
Request To Send (RTS)
A V.24 (EIA232) signal sent from the local
computer to the modem, usually indicating that
the computer is ready to begin sending data to
the modem.
Serial port
The port through which digital signals are
exchanged between the modem and the local
computer.
Smart mode
The state in which the modem recognizes
commands and sends result codes.
Spoofing
A technique to enhance data throughput.
During a parallel-port connection, the modem
sends messages to the remote computer to
maintain the data flow without interruption.
This emulates (spoofs) a protocol typically
used in serial communications.
Synchronous
Data communications using a synchronous
computer. Data transmission is clock-driven
and does not use start/stop protocol.
Tone dialing
Telephone dialing accomplished by sending a
series of tones.
