Glossary-3
CCITT
(Now ITU-T) International Telegraph and
Telephone Consultative Committee, the
former name for the international organization
that decides upon recommended
communication protocol standards. See also
ITU-T.
Carrier Detect (CD)
A V.24 (EIA232) signal sent from the modem
to the local computer, usually indicating that
the modem has detected a carrier signal over
the communications line.
Cellular network
A cellular service available to cellular phone
users by subscription. The service area is
usually subdivided into geographical cells,
each with its own radio tower (cell site). The
modem making the call through a cellular
phone is the cell-side or remote site and one
using a conventional phone is the land-side or
central site.
Command response
The OK response character that is sent to your
terminal or computer to indicate the modem is
ready to enter AT mode commands.
Command state
The state the modem is in when it can accept
commands that you enter at the keyboard.
Compromise equalization
A method of compensating for the differences
in attenuation at different frequencies.
Configuration settings
The command and register settings that
determine how the modem communicates over
the serial port and modem port.
Connect state
The state the modem is in when transmitting or
receiving data over the communications line.
Cyclic Redundancy Check
(CRC)
A method of error-checking used by MNP,
where the sender and receiver both perform a
polynomial algorithm on each data packet
transmitted over the communications line. If
the results do not match, a transmission error
occurred and the packet is retransmitted.
