Checking the PCU
Each time you use the PCU, carefully inspect the PCU connector plug and the rubber
ring on the plug before you start. If there are any changes in the color of the plug or
the rubber ring (for example, if a grayish color is apparent), the unit must be checked
by a B-K Medical service representative before you use it.
The outside surface of the watertight plug cover may change color slightly after
repeated disinfection. This does not represent any problem.
For details of cleaning and disinfecting the PCU, see “Palm Control Unit (PCU)” on
page 202.
Putting Sterile Covers on the PCU
Sterile covers (one for the PCU and one for the cable) are available for use with the
PCU. The package containing the sterile covers (UA0029) contains a PCU cover, a
cable cover, clips and some tape.
Latex
sensitivity
The procedure for putting on the sterile covers is illustrated in Fig 2-10.
To put sterile covers on the PCU and cable:
1
Always wear sterile gloves while you put on the sterile covers.
2
Put the PCU in the sterile PCU cover and twist the cover around the cable so it
fits closely.
3
Use the provided tape or clips to fasten the cover to the cable.

WARNING Because of reports of severe allergic reactions to medical devices
containing latex (natural rubber), the FDA is advising health-care professionals to
identify latex-sensitive patients and be prepared to treat allergic reactions promptly [1].
