Removal/Installation
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Make sure the main switch is off.
3. Disconnect the electrical lead from the negative
battery terminal (A,
Figure 1
).
4. Pull back the rubber boot and disconnect the ca-
ble from the starter terminal (A,
Figure 16
).
5. Remove the two starter mounting bolts (B,
Fig-
ure 16
). Pull the starter toward the right and remove
it.
6. Remove and discard the O-ring (A,
Figure 17
).
7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Install a new O-ring (A,
Figure 17
). Lubri-
cate the O-ring with lithium soap grease.
b. Tighten the starter mounting bolts (B,
Figure
16
) to 10 N•m (89 in.-lb.).
c. Make sure the electrical connector is free of
corrosion and is tight.

1. If still installed, remove and discard the O-ring

) from the front cover.
2. Remove the outer snap ring (B,
Figure 17
), the
starter gear (C) and the inner snap ring.
3. Remove the case bolts (
Figure 19
) from the
starter.
