for example, tighten the spoke(s) on the left of the
rim and loosen the opposite spoke(s) on the right.
NOTE
The number of spokes to loosen and
tighten will depend on the amount of
runout. As a minimum, always adjust
two or three spokes in the vicinity of
the rim runout. If runout affects a
greater area along the rim, adjust a
greater number of spokes.
4. If radial runout is excessive, the hub is not cen-
tered within the rim. The rim needs to move relative
the centerline of the hub. See
Figure 45
. Draw the
high point of the rim toward the centerline of the
hub by tightening the spokes in the area of the high
point and by loosening spokes on the low side.
Tighten and loosen the spokes in equal amounts to
prevent distortion.
5. Rotate the wheel and check runout. Continue ad-
justing the spokes until runout is within the specifi-
cation listed in
Table 1
. Be patient and thorough,
adjusting the position of the rim a little at a time.
6. After truing the wheel, seat each spoke in the
hub by tapping it with a flat nose punch and ham-
mer. Recheck the spoke tension and wheel runout.
Readjust if necessary.
7. Check the ends of the spokes on the tube side of
the rim. Grind off any spoke that protrudes from the
nipple so it will not puncture the tube.
WHEEL BALANCE
An unbalanced wheel is unsafe. Depending on
the degree of unbalance and the speed of the motor-
cycle, a rider may experience anything from a mild
vibration to a violent shimmy that may result in loss
of control.
Before balancing a wheel, thoroughly clean the
wheel assembly. Make sure the wheel bearings are
in good condition and properly lubricated. The
wheel must rotate freely. Also make sure the bal-
ance mark on the tire (
Figure 46
) aligns with the
valve stem. If not, break the tire loose from the rim
and align it before balancing the wheel. Refer to
Tire Changing
in this chapter.
NOTE
Balance the wheels with the brake
disc attached. The disc rotates with
the wheel and affects the balance.
