2. Apply engine oil to the teeth of the middle drive
shaft and install the middle drive shaft assembly
into the crankcase.
3. Turn the bearing retainer (A,
Figure 40
) until it
is in place.
4. Using the bearing retainer wrench (
Figure 39
),
torque the bearing retainer to 110 N•m (81 ft.-lb.).
6. Stake the bearing retainer threads (
Figure 38
) to
lock it in place.
7. Check the middle gear backlash as described
later in this chapter.
Disassembly
1. Compress the damper spring with the damper
spring compressor (
Figure 41
) and remove the
spring retainers.
2. Remove the spring seat, damper spring and both
spring cams.
3. Install the middle drive shaft holder (A,
Figure
42
) onto the middle drive shaft and secure the
holder in a vise.
4. Unstake the threads of the middle drive shaft
nut.
5. Install the middle drive shaft nut wrench (B,
Fig-
ure 42
). Loosen and remove the nut from the mid-
dle drive shaft.
6. Install a bearing splitter onto the middle drive
shaft. Support the splitter in a press and press the
shaft from the bearing.
7. Remove the bearing and shims.
8. Inspect the middle drive shaft assembly as de-
scribed in this section.
Assembly
NOTE
New middle drive shaft shims must be
installed whenever the middle drive
shaft or the crankcases have been re
placed. If necessary, select new shims
as described in this section.
1. If necessary, select new middle drive shaft
shims.
2. Install the shims and install the bearing onto the
middle drive shaft. Apply oil to the bearing and use
a hydraulic press to press the shaft into the bearing.
3. Screw a new middle drive shaft nut onto the
shaft.
